Bucharest, June 2025: Romania's under-19s reach the semi-final of a home tournament, fall to the Netherlands, then lose the third-place match to Spain and finish fourth — the same placing the side managed in 2011.

The current side traces back to the old under-18 competition, where Romania's best moment actually sits: a 4–1 win over Yugoslavia in the 1962 final, with a runners-up finish to Hungary two years before that. Hungary carries weight beyond the scoreline, and matches against Serbia, as Yugoslavia's successor, still get read the same way.

Under coach Ion Marin, the 2025 squad played its qualifiers and the tournament itself in and around the capital, with the Stadionul Arcul de Triumf serving as a regular base rather than a fixed home ground. The team shares its nickname, "Tricolorii Mici" — the Small Tricolours, after the national blue, yellow and red — with the under-21s.

That's the point of a youth team: not the table position but who moves through it. Nicolae Stanciu came up through this level before captaining the senior national side, and Radu Drăgușin went from these squads to a place at Euro 2024.
