Sankara Nationals FC was established there in 2015.

The team's home, Yendi Sports Stadium, has been slow in coming together. President Nana Akufo-Addo inspected the unfinished site in August 2022, and by 2024 the Ya-Na of Dagbon was still appealing publicly for the stadium to be completed.

Results moved quicker than the building work. In 2024, Sankara Nationals beat Steadfast FC 2-1 to win the Northern Region Football Association Division Two League. Abubakari Damba , a coach with a long-standing name in Ghanaian football, returned to the club late in 2025 — back to where his own career had started.

Sankara Nationals opened their Division One account against Wa Power with a 1-0 win, Sylvester Biyandal scoring off a chance made by Toufick Hardi. The club is playing out its first season at this level, still on the back of that 2024 promotion.
