Uzbekistan hosted the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup, beating the home side 2–0 in the final on goals from Ahmed Al-Ghamdi and Firas Al-Buraikan. The head coach that night was Saad Alshehri, who had also taken the team to the Tokyo Olympics the year before, where it went out in the group stage after matches with Ivory Coast, Germany and Brazil. Luigi Di Biagio has since taken over the bench.

The team exists because of a rule rather than a tradition: the Saudi Arabian Football Federation set it up in 2009 once AFC and FIFA began requiring a dedicated under-23 side for Olympic qualifying and the AFC U-23 Championship. It carries the senior national team's green and the nickname the Green Falcons, and it answers to the federation's headquarters in Riyadh rather than to one stadium — it has turned out at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium, King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah and Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium in Riyadh depending on the tournament.

Its most consistent success has come in the Gulf, where it has won the U23 Gulf Cup of Nations five times, most recently in 2025 with a 2–0 win over Iraq. Further back, the record includes an Asian Games silver from 1986, when South Korea beat it 2–0 in the final, and a bronze from 1982 after a win over North Korea.

The under-23s do not carry a rivalry of their own, distinct from the one the senior team plays into; when Saudi Arabia's age-group side takes the field, it is against Iran and Iraq that the game still carries the old weight.
