Slovan Sabinov

Sabinov sits in the Prešov region of eastern Slovakia. MFK Slovan Sabinov has worn that name only since 2002, the last stop in a string of relabellings — Sabinovský AC, Slávia, Sokol, Družstevník, Strojsan — It started out in 1921 as Sabinovský AC.

Its ceiling was the 2007–08 campaign in the 2. Liga (East), and the club came straight back down after finishing 14th. The honours that do exist sit a tier or two below that: the I. A trieda title in 1979–80 and again in 1982–83, and a 4. Liga (North) championship in 2002–03 that carried Sabinov up into the 3. Liga. None of it amounts to a cup run or a national trophy.

The one name that travelled beyond Sabinov is Martin Jakubko, who started out here as a boy before moving on through Lipany and Tatran Prešov, then abroad to Spartak Moscow and Saturn Ramenskoye, and went on to play for Slovakia at Euro 2004 and in Euro 2016 qualifying. The club that shaped him stayed put.

Games are played at the Štadión MFK Slovan Sabinov, holding 3,000 with 560 seats, in the club's red and blue.
