Sparta Katowice

Katowice's football map is dominated by Ekstraklasa club GKS, but in the Ligota district a different tradition took hold in 1924, when KS Ligocianka Katowice first put a team together. The line to today's club runs through mergers and renamings rather than a straight history: the multi-sport side that eventually took the Sparta name formed separately in 1946 as K.S. Społem, passed through K.S. Tęcza and K.S. Spójnia, and became K.S. Sparta in 1954. On 1 January 1965, Sparta absorbed KS Budowlani, Ligocianka's successor, and BKS Sparta Katowice took its present shape — with the football section keeping 1924 as its founding year.

For most of that history, Sparta's trophies came from a different sport. The men's handball team won the Polish Championship five times through the 1950s, plus a Polish Cup in 1960, while the footballers never reached that level. That changed in the 2024/25 season, when Sparta topped the IV Liga Śląska I with 80 points and sealed promotion with a 5-0 win over Odra Wodzisław on 4 June 2025 — the first time the football section has moved up into the III Liga.

The club plays in blue and white at Boisko MOSiR "Rapid" on Grażyńskiego street, a compact ground holding around 2,000. Tomasz Hołota, who had played in the Ekstraklasa and been called into the national set-up, turned out for Sparta in the 2022/23 season after stepping back from the professional game.

Promotion has sharpened the local rivalry with Rozwój Katowice, the other club from the city, and meetings between them are known simply as the Katowice Derby.
