The club now known as Frýdek-Místek came out of the steel mills, the Válcovny plechu, which is where the nickname Valcíři, the rollers, comes from. In 1997 the two rivals merged.

The club was founded in 1921, after informal games from 1919 under the name Karlovohutní FK. It changed its name repeatedly: in 1950 it was ZSJ Železárny Stalingrad, in 1954 DSO Baník Místek, in 1960 TJ VP Frýdek-Místek. The name MFK Frýdek-Místek arrived in 2011.

Frýdek-Místek won Divize D in 1972/73, took the 3. Liga in 1974/75, and in 1975/76 won the second tier, the Czech National Football League, to reach the Czechoslovak First League. Jozef Marchevský scored 14 goals, the team's best return, and later won the league with Baník Ostrava. Lubomír Juřica went on to Slavia and Sigma Olomouc and played for Czechoslovakia, and Ivan Kopecký later managed Slavia Prague.

The top flight has not returned since 1977. In the Czech Cup the furthest the club has gone is the quarter-finals, in 1992/93 and 2013/14.
