In Ostrava-Vítkovice, Vítkovice's footballers settled for "Vítky" instead.

It started in 1919 as SK Slavoj Vítkovice, folded within a few years over money, and came back in 1922 as SK Vítkovice. Bankruptcy finished the old club off in 2011. What plays now, as MFK Vítkovice, was assembled a year later out of the wreckage and a side called Fotbal Poruba.

The name that mattered most belonged to the old club, in the mid-1980s. Under coach Ivan Kopecký, Vítkovice won the Czechoslovak championship in 1985/86, then finished runners-up the following season, and in 1987/88 reached the Czechoslovak Cup final and the UEFA Cup quarter-final. Home games were played at what is now the Městský stadion v Ostravě-Vítkovicích, holding 15,123.

He was already regarded as one of the most prolific strikers the game had produced, and at Vítkovice, aged 37, he still finished a season as the league's top scorer. In 58 appearances for the club, he scored 74 goals.
