Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen

The most recent titles at Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen came in 2017 and 2019. In 2017 the club won Landesliga Württemberg (Staffel 2) and the WFV-Pokal, the Württemberg cup, in the same year. The cup win sent them into the 2017–18 DFB-Pokal, the German Cup.

Dorfmerkingen is a village that belongs to the town of Neresheim in Baden-Württemberg, and the club has about 500 members. The results have come well above what a village that size would suggest. The climb started in the local leagues: Kreisliga B in 1984, Kreisliga A in 1987, the Bezirksliga in 1988. In 1993 it took the Bezirksliga Kocher/Rems title.

Cup football has its own rules, and Dorfmerkingen has used them twice. The first WFV-Pokal came in 1998, which earned a place in the 1998–99 DFB-Pokal. That was also the year they finished as runners-up in the Verbandsliga, so the cup win arrived alongside a league season that had already gone well. The second cup win, in 2017, came in the same season as the Landesliga title.

Local papers call the fixture against SV Waldhausen a "Prestigeduell", a prestige duel. It is not a formal derby, but it is the match in the area that carries some weight. The ground on Felsenstraße, sponsored as the Ingenieurbeton Röser Arena, is home to a black-and-red team known simply as SfD.
