SSV Ulm merged in May 1970 and the football side eventually split off on its own in 2009.
The club's one taste of the top flight came in 1999–2000, and it arrived on the back of Ralf Rangnick's work in the late 1990s, when he took Ulm from the Regionalliga through the 2. Bundesliga and into the Bundesliga itself before leaving in March 1999. The season that followed was rough: a 9–1 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, four players sent off in a single match against Hansa Rostock, and a 16th-place finish that sent them straight back down.
Since then it has been a story of climbing and slipping back: an Amateur Championship in 1996, a Regionalliga Südwest title in 2022–23, then promotion as 3. Liga champions in 2023–24, only for relegation to follow in 2024–25 and again after a 19th-place finish the year after, dropping the Sparrows back into the Regionalliga Südwest.
