Bundesliga, promoted through a play-off against Karlsruhe. It was the second time the club had reached that level; the first, in 2003/04, had come by finishing high enough.

The football section began on 4 October 1907 inside the gymnastics club Turnerbund Jahn Regensburg. It split off in 2000 to stand on its own, and in 2009 the professional side was carved out again into a separate corporate structure.

The season before the move, the club had won the Regionalliga Bayern and beaten Wolfsburg's reserves to get out of it.

Between the promotions, in 2004, the club brought in Mario Basler as sporting director. The former Germany international lasted two years in the role.
