FC Wurzburger Kickers

Two minutes from the end of the 2019/20 second-tier season, Würzburger Kickers sat second in the table with promotion in hand. Bayern Munich's reserve side had finished first, and reserve sides cannot go up regardless of where they finish. The Kickers stayed where they were, in the Bundesliga's second tier.

The club started in 1907, when schoolboys in Würzburg formed a team under a first chairman, Georg Bier, soon replaced by Alfred Günzburger. What followed was decades of borrowed names: a 1928 merger with VfL Würzburg left the side playing as FC Würzburger Kickers VfL for two years before the old name returned, and after the war a further merger with TSV Würzburg had them turning out as SC Würzburger Kickers until 1956, when Bier's club reclaimed its title in time for its fiftieth anniversary.

For most of that history, the top flight was somewhere else. A single season in the second division, 1977/78, ended in relegation, and it stayed that way until 2014, when the club restructured into a stock company and turned professional.

Home games are played at the Akon Arena on the Dallenberg, a ground the club moved into in 1967 and that holds just over 13,000. Local rivalry runs against Würzburger FV, and a longer-standing one against 1. FC Schweinfurt 05, fought out as Lower Franconia's own derby.
