MSV Duisburg

Second in the Bundesliga's inaugural season, 1963/64, remains the highest league finish MSV Duisburg have managed — a club that had been invited into the new top flight the year before as one of its sixteen founding members, and never got closer to the title itself.

The club grew out of Meiderich, the Duisburg district where it was founded on 2 June 1902 as Meidericher Spiel-Verein. A 1905 merger with Sportclub Viktoria Meiderich, a wartime union with a gymnastics club that later fell apart over internal disputes, and, on 9 January 1967, a formal renaming to MSV Duisburg, adopted to tie the club more closely to the city and secure municipal backing.

Three Intertoto Cup wins followed in the 1970s, in 1974, 1977 and 1978, and the club went as far as the UEFA Cup semi-final in 1978/79 before losing to Borussia Mönchengladbach. Four DFB-Pokal finals came and went without a trophy: defeats to Bayern in 1966 and again in 1998, to Eintracht Frankfurt in 1975, and a 0-5 loss to Schalke in 2011. Bernard Dietz captained the side through much of that first era, from 1970 to 1982, playing 394 Bundesliga matches and scoring 70 goals before winning the European Championship with West Germany in 1980. A decade later, Michael Tönnies gave the club its record individual Bundesliga haul, five goals in a single match in 1991, on his way to the 2. Bundesliga's top scorer award that season.

Financial trouble has shadowed the club as much as any opponent. A licensing failure forced relegation from the 2. Bundesliga to the 3. Liga in 2013. In 2024, MSV dropped into the Regionalliga West for the first time in its history, again for financial reasons, before winning that division outright and returning to the 3. Liga the following season. Against Rot-Weiss Essen, the fixture still known locally as the "kleines Revierderby," the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena holds up to 31,502.
