«The Reds»
The DFB-Pokal Hannover 96 lifted in 1992 came out of the second division, and no second-tier side had won it before. That trophy sits alongside two German championships — the first in 1938, decided only after a final replay against Schalke 04, the second in 1954 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
The club that won them started as Hannoverscher Fußball-Club von 1896, founded in April of that year in the capital of Lower Saxony. The colours it kept from a 1913 merger with Ballverein 1898 Hannovera were black, white and green. The shirt it chose for home matches was red, and the name stuck: Die Roten, the Reds, or Rothemden — the red shirts.
Promotion has come the hard way more than once. Hannover went up as champions of the 2. Bundesliga in 1975, again in 1987, and again in 2002.
The European record is narrower and older — three Intertoto Cups, the first in 1967/68 and two more in consecutive seasons in the early 1970s. Closer to home, the Niedersachsenpokal came twice in a row, in 1996/97 and 1997/98.
The ground holds 49,700.
