The Nordderby against Hamburger SV carries most of the north German coast's football history.
Holstein Kiel's own story splits into two clubs before it becomes one. Kieler Fußball-Verein von 1900 grew out of the football section of a gymnastics club in Kiel, and two years later a separate side, Kieler Fußball-Club Holstein, formed in the same city. The Holstein side went through name changes as hockey and athletics departments were added, and in June 1917 the two merged into KSV Holstein — keeping the earlier 1900 founding date as its own.
Bundesliga. Lewis Holtby captained that side, having joined the club in 2021 and stayed through to the promotion four years later.
The academy has produced players who left before the club reached the top flight itself. Alphonso Davies started playing football at 13 in Kiel before moving on to Vancouver Whitecaps and then Bayern, a route that ran through the club's youth system rather than its first team.
