The yellow shirts with black stripes gave Aachen the nickname that stuck: Kartoffelkäfer, the potato beetles.

Three times the club has reached the final of the DFB-Pokal and three times lost it — to Rot-Weiss Essen in 1953, to Borussia Dortmund in 1965, and in 2004 to Werder Bremen, 3-2.

What defines the modern club is what happened in 2012. Insolvency forced a decision taken in November of that year to drop deliberately into the Regionalliga, the fourth tier, to restructure the debt, and Aachen began 2013/14 there. Ten seasons passed in the lower divisions before the club won the Regionalliga West in 2023/24 and climbed back into the 3. Liga — the third of its titles in that division, after 1966/67, which took the club up to the Bundesliga, and 1998/99. That same spring brought the Mittelrhein cup as well, 4-2 against Bonner SC.

Essen remain the opponent that matters most — the Traditionsderby, and the club that beat Aachen in that first cup final.
