M. Wagner

Matti Wagner has come home. The left-back grew up in Aachen and, in June 2026, signed permanently for Alemannia Aachen on a free transfer, on a contract that runs until 2028 with an option for a further season. He had already spent part of the previous campaign at the club on loan, making 18 appearances in the 3. Liga.

The route there ran through one of Germany's larger academies. Wagner started at Germania Dürwiß and VfR Linden-Neusen before joining 1. FC Köln in 2016, where he stayed for eight years. His last season in Cologne brought 13 league appearances for the reserve side.

The move to SpVgg Greuther Fürth in 2024 delivered the professional debut — one senior appearance in the 2. Bundesliga, in September 2024 — but little beyond it. Eight matches for the reserves in the Regionalliga Bayern made up most of his football that year. A loan to Rot-Weiss Essen in 2025 changed that: 15 matches in the 3. Liga, and a regular run of games at third-tier level for the first time. The second loan, to Aachen, produced more still, and the permanent deal followed.

Wagner has represented Germany at youth level, with one cap for the U18 side in 2023 and nine for the U19s between 2023 and 2024. He has not been capped at senior level.

He is left-footed and plays specifically at left-back, wearing the number 3 shirt at Aachen. His two years at Fürth passed largely in the reserves; the loans, rather than the parent club, gave him his professional grounding.
