Tilbury

Tilbury's fixture against Grays Athletic carries a name most derbies don't bother with, the 'El Chavico', locally it's just the Big Thurrock Derby, two clubs from the same stretch of Essex docklands measuring themselves against each other whenever the fixture list allows it.

The club itself grew out of the docks. Workers at Tilbury Docks formed the side in 1889, and the connection stuck hard enough that it's still known as The Dockers. What it didn't do, decades later, mattered as much as how it began: offered the chance to become a feeder club for Clapton Orient, Tilbury turned it down and instead moved into Chadfields in 1947, a ground that had been laid out for greyhound racing before football took it over.

Money for the move came, in part, from selling Tom Scannell to Southend United, the fee going straight into buying the ground the club still plays on. Two names stand out from what followed: Nicky Smith, who pulled on the shirt 424 times between 1975 and 1982, and Ross Livermore, whose 282 goals make him the club's leading scorer.

The best run in the FA Cup came in 1977–78, when Tilbury reached the Third Round before losing to Stoke City.

None of it changes what the fixture against Grays Athletic means twice a season, still the game the ground fills out for.
