Tobacco Road plays in USL League Two and, alongside that, in the Triangle Adult Soccer League (TASL). Its squads draw from the North Carolina FC youth academy and from local colleges such as UNC Chapel Hill.

The clubs that came before it worked on a smaller scale. Clockwork Orange started in the early 2000s under Drew Moss, and Telepathic Graphics followed around 2010. In 2013 Seth Kaplan and Cedric Burke rebranded the operation as Tobacco Road, a name taken from the Durham region's tobacco-growing past.

The best results have come in the amateur cup, not the league. Tobacco Road won the USASA Region III Amateur Cup in 2023 and won it again in 2024. Each time the run continued to the National Amateur Cup semifinals. SC MesoAmerica FC beat them in the first, and New York Pancyprian Freedoms FC in the second.
