Tonbridge Angels

In 1951, Longmead's predecessor, the Angel Ground, held 8,236 people for an FA Cup tie against Aldershot. When Tonbridge Angels finally beat it, in the 2024–25 FA Cup against Harborough Town at Longmead, 3,132 turned up, a fraction of the old crowd but enough to stand as the record for the ground the club has called home since 1980. That move followed a legal dispute with the local council over redevelopment of the Angel Ground, and when the club left, it took the old main stand with it, dismantled and rebuilt on Darenth Avenue.

The name itself came from that first ground: the club was founded as Tonbridge Football Club in 1947, and only after settling near the Angel Hotel in 1949 did the nickname "The Angels" attach itself, eventually becoming part of the official name in 1994. The continuity is not quite unbroken — the original company went into voluntary liquidation in 1976, and Tonbridge Angels FC was formed at once to finish out the season's fixtures.

Malcolm Macdonald passed through as a junior in 1965 before going on to score for Arsenal, Newcastle and England, and Roy Hodgson turned out for the club in the 1960s, long before Aston Villa or the England dugout entered his career. Honours have mostly come in Kent's own competitions — the Kent Senior Shield five times between 1952 and 1964, the Kent League title in 1993 — the kind of record a club builds without ever pushing far beyond its county.

That county is also where the rivalries sit. Maidstone United and Dartford both supply what locals call the Kent derby, with Dover Athletic and Welling United completing the list of neighbours Tonbridge measure themselves against most often.
