Adrian Mititelu re-registered the club in 2017, four years after an earlier version he had built collapsed into bankruptcy. What he restarted was not a blank page: he tied it to Universitatea Craiova, the entity founded in 1948 and dissolved in 1991, and pressed that claim against CS Universitatea Craiova, the club recognised by the Romanian football authorities as legal heir to the same history. The dispute has been fought in court as much as on the pitch. A Timișoara appeals ruling handed the pre-1991 honours to the rival club in July 2023; the High Court of Cassation and Justice threw that ruling out in June 2025 and sent the case back with nothing settled. FC U Craiova 1948 counts the 1992–93 Cupa României among the honours it claims from the years in between.

On the pitch the climb was rapid: Liga IV in 2017–18, Liga III in 2019–20, Liga II in 2020–21, that returned the club to Liga I for 2021–22. The fall came faster. Administrative relegation to Liga III followed on 19 June 2025, for want of a licence, and by September the club had been excluded from all competitions over unpaid debts.

In August 2025 the Romanian federation deducted 94 points.
