Wacker Burghausen

The title that mattered most came in 2002, when Wacker Burghausen won the Regionalliga Süd and reached the 2. Bundesliga for the first time. The club had won the same division in 1995 too. That spell in the second tier lasted five seasons, all of them ending in mid-table, until relegation in 2007.

The side was formed in 1930 by merging 1. FC Burghausen with a works sports society of the Wacker Chemie plant. The stadium on the Liebigstraße was renamed Wacker-Arena in 2002, the year of promotion, after renovations. It holds 10,000, of whom 3,350 can sit.

The record crowd, 11,582, came for the German Cup first round in 2007–08, when Bayern Munich drew 1–1 and went through 4–3 on penalties. Four years earlier the club had beaten TSV Gerbrunn 14–0 in the same competition.

Marek Krejčí, who played for the club, died in 2007. Wacker Burghausen retired his number 11 shirt.

The 3. Liga began in 2008 with Wacker in it. The club stayed up in 2008–09 and 2009–10 only because other teams became insolvent. Relegation came in 2014, and the club has played in the Regionalliga Bayern since. Money was the problem off the pitch too: a restructuring in 2017 returned the club to amateur status. Its rival is SSV Jahn Regensburg, in the Ostbayern-Derby.

The Bavarian Cup has ended in defeat in the final five times: in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2017. The second division has not been seen again since 2007.
