That two-legged play-off, the closest the Young Dragons have come to a European Under-21 Championship finals, is still the reference point when the team's history comes up.

The team was formed in 1976, when UEFA restructured its youth football and replaced the old under-23 category with an under-21 one. Wales played their first match that December, a goalless draw with England at Molineux.

The Football Association of Wales has never settled the side at one ground. Cardiff City Stadium, which holds 33,280, has hosted most of the group's home matches in recent seasons. What has stayed constant is the kit, red shirts and white shorts, matching the senior side, and the nickname that goes with it, the Young Dragons.

Matty Jones took over as head coach in September 2022, following Paul Bodin.
