Werder Bremen II

Max Kruse came through the Weserstadion Platz 11 academy sides before anyone outside Bremen knew his name, one of a line that runs through Torsten Frings, Aaron Hunt and Tim Borowski — players who took their first senior touches in the green and white of the reserves before the first team ever called on them. That is what the second team has always been for: not a competition to win, but a bridge from the youth ranks to the Bundesliga dressing room.

The reserve side was formed on 4 February 1899, the same day as the parent club, and for decades that closeness showed on the pitch rather than in the record books. Three German Amateur Championships came in 1966, 1985 and 1991, the last of them settled with a 2–1 win over SpVgg 07 Ludwigsburg. Two Oberliga Nord titles followed in the early 1980s, evidence of a team that regularly outgrew the amateur level it was meant to occupy.

More recently the club's path has run in both directions. Werder II won the Regionalliga Nord in 2014–15 and went up to the 3. Liga, then found itself back down in the Bremen-Liga by 2023 before winning that division in 2024 and returning to the Regionalliga Nord. In the Bremer Pokal the team built a habit of winning through the 1990s and 2000s, collecting enough runs to reach the DFB-Pokal 19 times.

Derby weekends now belong to other reserve sides. The fixture against Hamburger SV II is known locally as the Kleines Nordderby, matches with Hannover 96 II carry their own edge, and the meetings with Bremer SV are simply the Stadtduell — a city match played out on a ground built to hold 5,500, a fraction of the stadium next door that the first team fills.
