BFC Preussen

Between 1899 and 1912, BFC Preußen were crowned champions of Brandenburg and Berlin five times, in an age when German football had no unified league and cities settled their own titles before sending a winner into the national play-offs. That run peaked in 1912, when Preußen reached the quarter-finals of the German Championship.

The side traces back to 1 May 1894, when students at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium formed a team under the name BFC Friedrich Wilhelm; a year later it became Preußen, and by 1900 the club stood among the founders of the German Football Association.

The honours after that came at a lower altitude. Berlin's regional Oberliga, then the third tier, was won four times between 1972 and 1981, the Verbandsliga once, in 2005, and the Berlin Cup four times.

Black and white have stayed the colours throughout, and the nickname Die Preußen has followed just as long. Berlin has room for Hertha BSC and Union Berlin too, but no derby with either has taken hold around Preußen the way local rivalries have elsewhere in the city. After several changes of ground, the club settled in 1938 at the Preußenstadion in Lankwitz, which holds 3,000.
