Tasmania Berlin

Platz 3 at Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportpark holds no more than 3,000 spectators, a modest ground in Neukölln for a club that once shared a city stage with Hertha BSC. Tasmania plays there because it had to start again from nothing: when SC Tasmania 1900 Berlin went bankrupt in 1973, former players founded SV Tasmania on the same day, February 3, in the seventh tier, and rebuilt under three different names before settling on Tasmania Berlin in 2011.

The old club had already written its name into the game, for better and for worse. Between 1909 and 1911 it took three straight Berlin Championships and reached the German Championship semi-finals, then added Berlin Cups through the 1960s. The 1965–66 season told the other half of the story: promoted to the Bundesliga, Tasmania finished bottom with ten points from 34 matches and a goal difference of minus 93, a season still cited whenever German football discusses its worst top-flight campaigns.

Among the players who passed through, Jonny Egbuono stands apart: he turned out for the club between 1968 and 1972 as one of the first Black footballers in Germany. Carsten Ramelow came up through the youth ranks before he went on to play for Hertha BSC and Bayer Leverkusen and to win caps for Germany.

The revived club has since climbed back through the Berlin leagues, winning the Verbandsliga in 1997 and 2019 and the Berlin-Liga in 2018–19. In 2021 it topped the NOFV-Oberliga Nord, and it did so again in 2026, sending Tasmania up to the Regionalliga Nordost.
