Mark Robson has been back in charge of West Ham United's Under-21s since the start of the season, resuming the role after Greg Lincoln had filled in as interim coach. The side compete in Premier League 2 Division One and the Premier League Cup, the same competitions that have long fed the club's academy graduates toward first-team football.

The clearest recent proof of that pipeline came in 2024, when the U21s won the FA Youth Cup for a fourth time, beating Arsenal 5-1. The club had produced lopsided scorelines in that competition before: in 1999 they put nine goals past Coventry City without reply, and in 1963 it took two legs and eleven goals between the sides to see off Liverpool. Tottenham Hotspur were the opponents in 1981, beaten narrowly over two legs — a result that still sits behind a fixture the young Hammers treat as their sharpest test, given the rivalry it inherits from the senior sides.

A decade earlier than the 2024 final, in 2016, the age group added the U21 Premier League Cup, won on penalties against Hull City after the tie could not be settled over two legs.

What the academy has sent upward matters more than what it has won. Bobby Moore came through these ranks, and Declan Rice followed a comparable route out of the same system. The setup that produced them took its name, the Academy of Football, in the early 1960s under manager Ron Greenwood, who built on foundations Ted Fenton had already laid through the previous decade.
