Wiedenbrück

Two clubs in Rheda-Wiedenbrück spent decades playing in each other's shadow before someone decided the town was better served by one strong side than two modest ones. In 2000, DJK Eintracht Wiedenbrück and SV Westfalia Wiedenbrück merged into SC Wiedenbrück 2000, and the name change said everything about the ambition behind it — a fresh start, dated to the year it happened.

The climb through the regional pyramid followed: the Landesliga Westfalen in 2006, the Verbandsliga Westfalen three years later, the NRW-Liga the year after that, then a first Westfalenpokal in 2010/11. Each step up brought the club closer to the Regionalliga, and with it came a problem the Jahnstadion wasn't built for — the ground holds 2,550, well short of what the German Football Association demands at that level, so the club expanded capacity to 5,000 to keep its licence. By 2015 the "2000" had served its purpose and was dropped from the name; the club had stopped being a project and become simply SC Wiedenbrück.

Two cup runs to the first round of the DFB-Pokal, in 2012 and 2014, marked the high point of that spell in senior football, though the ledger has had its harder pages too — January 2024 brought the loss of the club's main sponsor, 3C-Gruppe, a blow the club absorbed while holding on to its Regionalliga licence.

None of it matters more, in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, than the fixture against FC Gütersloh. They call it the Kreisderby, and for a club built to unite one town's football, beating the neighbours from the next one over is still the result that counts.
