The club itself came out of a merger: three sides from the town, FC Antipodia, FC Germania and FC Minerva, joined in 1899 to make one. The name Verein für Leibesübungen arrived in 1924; the founding year was written into it a decade later.

Since then the story has run mostly between the second and third tiers, with promotion and relegation coming round often enough. Few players get to know a club from both ends of the touchline.

The purple and white on the terraces gave the side its nickname, the Purple-Whites.
