Woodford Town

Jimmy Greaves came to Ashton Playing Fields after his professional career had ended, pulling on the yellow shirt of a club his own father, Jack Greaves, had once served as president. Johnny Haynes had worn the same colours as a boy. That original club dated from 1937 and built a modest record around Snakes Lane: a First Round appearance in the FA Cup in 1986–87, before Leyton Orient ended the run. None of it saved the club from a vote out of the Essex Senior League in 2003, after which it folded.

What plays under the Woodford Town name now is a different lineage in disguise. It started in 2002 as Mauritius Sports and only became Woodford Town again in 2017–18. Frenford and Ilford remain the derbies that matter most on the fixture list.

Home is Ashton Playing Fields on Chigwell Road, a ground built around an athletics track with the pitch sitting in the infield and a 350-seat stand named after Jas Athwal facing the action.
