Young Apostles

The Wenchi Sports Stadium holds barely a thousand people, and it is where Young Apostles have played their way up rather than bought their way up. The club came together in Wenchi in 2012, in Ghana's Bono region, and spent years working through the lower tiers before its name meant anything beyond the town.

That changed in the 2023–24 season. Young Apostles won Zone 1 of the Access Bank Division One League, then had to get past Techiman Heroes in the promotion playoff, a tie that finished 1–1 after normal time and went to penalties. The Apostles held their nerve, won the shoot-out 4–3, and with it a place in the Ghana Premier League for 2024–25.

The nickname is the plainer of the two forms Ghanaian media use, "Apostles," and it now travels with them into matches against Nsoatreman FC, whose home in Berekum sits close enough to Wenchi that the fixture is billed locally as the Bono Derby.

Young Apostles have also been a way station for talent moving on to bigger leagues. Emmanuel Yeboah scored 10 goals in 16 appearances during the 2021–22 season before his transfer to CFR Cluj in Romania, and he later added a spell at Brøndby IF in Denmark and caps for Ghana's under-23 side. There was talk, too, of Asamoah Gyan taking an interest in the club, though Gyan himself denied any plan to buy it or move it to his hometown.

A stadium built for 1,000 now has a Premier League fixture list to fill.
