In May 1947 a group of railway workers there formed a football club and named it accordingly: Železničar, the railwayman.

The club plays at the SK Mladost ground. Železničar's own rise came late and in three distinct steps. It won the Vojvodina regional league in 2014/15, its first promotion to the third tier in the club's history. Five years later it topped the Serbian First League's East group when the 2019/20 season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, enough to confirm a place in the second tier.

The squad that reached the top flight has carried a few names of note. Slovak international defender Boris Sekulič, capped four times and previously at Slovan Bratislava and CSKA Sofia, played for the club, as did goalkeeper Milan Mijatović of Montenegro's national side. In 2024 Luka Vidić, son of former Manchester United and Serbia defender Nemanja Vidić, joined after coming through the academies at Inter and Crvena zvezda.
