It opened under the name Стад Пренс Луи Рвагасоре , after the prince. Three years later the demolition crews arrived, and the reconstruction proceeded with support from the FIFA Forward programme.
The pitch is synthetic, laid to FIFA Quality Pro. Capacity now stands at 22,000.
Football returned before the ribbon was cut. In September 2025 the rebuilt ground staged qualifiers for the 2026 women's U-20 World Cup and hosted the men's national side against Кения, several months ahead of the official opening on 31 January 2026.
