The ground has carried three names in its history — it opened as Mapinduzi Stadium, then became Sokoine Memorial Stadium in 1984 after Edward Sokoine, Tanzania's prime minister, died that year, with World Stadium Database also recording it once as Jamhuri Stadium.
Ownership sits with the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi. Prisons FC and Mbeya City FC both call it home. Groundstaff reworked the surface in August 2011, and by 2023 it needed attention again — this time because a concert by the musician Rayvanny left the turf too cut up for a match straight after.
That double life, as a football venue and a concert site, defines the place as much as anything on the scoreboard.
