Tanzania Prisons

Tanzania Prisons will spend the coming season in the Tanzanian Championship League. They finished 13th in the NBC Premier League in 2025–26 and went down with Mtibwa Sugar and KMC. The year was unsettled off the pitch as well. In February 2026 the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) barred the club from Sokoine Stadium in Mbeya over licensing failures, and home fixtures moved to Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma. The same month Zedeckia Evans Otieno left as head coach, and Amani Richad Josia took over for the remainder of the season.

The club belongs to the Tanzania Prisons Service (Jeshi la Magereza Tanzania), which set up the team in 1988 to represent it. Hence the nickname Wajela jela, Swahili for "The Jailers", and the light green kit. A date of 1963 sometimes appears alongside the club's name, but that is the service's own beginning rather than the team's.

The best years came at the end of the 1990s. In 1998 Prisons beat Tanzania Stars 2-1 in the final of the Nyerere Cup. The following year they won the Union League ahead of Mtibwa Sugar and Mlandege, and added the Muungano Cup. Charles Boniface Mkwasa was head coach for that title, with Freddy Felix "Minziro" as his assistant.

Shadrack Nsajigwa began his senior career here in 2004–05 before moving to Young Africans. He went on to win 51 caps for Tanzania. Matches against Mbeya City, the local rival, are known as the Mbeya Derby. Prisons have not won a league title since 1999, and the way back up now runs through the second tier.
