Namungo

Lindi sits on Tanzania's southern coast, a port town more used to being a footnote on the football map than a name on it. Namungo FC changed that, and it changed it with money pulled from underground. The club takes its name from the Namungo gold mine in nearby Ruangwa district, and its early years ran on a levy the miners agreed to themselves: 200 shillings out of each pay packet, fed straight into the club's account. Founded in 2019, Namungo turned a workplace collection into a first-division side inside a handful of seasons.

The nickname stuck fast — Wauwaji wa Kusini, the Southern Killers, a name that plays on a club from a region rarely taken seriously by the football establishment further north. Home games are played at Majaliwa Stadium, a ground that holds around 4,000, modest even by Tanzanian standards, but it has been enough to host continental football. In the 2020/21 season Namungo went into the CAF Confederation Cup and eliminated Angola's Primeiro de Agosto, a result that put a five-year-old club from a mining town into a group alongside Raja Casablanca and Pyramids FC.

The player most associated with the club's recent run is Erasto Nyoni, who joined Namungo in 2023 already carrying the record for most appearances by any player for the Tanzania national team, 107 caps by the time he signed. He stayed until 2025. The current dugout belongs to Juma Mgunda, in charge through the 2025/26 season, tasked with keeping a club still short of its tenth year competitive against sides with decades of history behind them.

Namungo's shirts run blue, green and white — colours drawn straight from the ground the club was named after. Six years is what separates the founding of a mining-town side from a Confederation Cup group stage against Raja Casablanca.
