About

Ligi Kuu Bara is the top tier of the Tanzanian football pyramid. The competition was founded in 1921 as the Dar es Salaam Football League during the British colonial administration, organized by colonial authorities and an army major, before the Tanganyika Football Association was established in 1930. The league expanded to a national scope in 1965, becoming the National League, and was renamed the Premier League in 1997. The competition is governed by the Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB) and currently features 16 clubs playing a double round-robin format (30 matches per team). Promotion and relegation involve the bottom two teams being directly relegated to the Ligi Daraja La Kwanza (First Division), while the top two from the second division are directly promoted. A playoff exists between the 17th place Premier League team and the winner of a playoff between the 3rd and 4th placed teams from the second division. Young Africans S.C. is the most successful club with 27 titles and is the current reigning champion for the 2025–26 season. The league is distinct from the Zanzibar Premier League, which is administratively separate and does not feed directly into the mainland league; Zanzibar champions qualify for continental CAF competitions and the Muungano Cup instead. Notable historical reforms include the Union League Era (1982–2003) where mainland and Zanzibar winners played for the national title, a format abolished when Zanzibar gained independent CAF membership. The league has had various sponsorship names, including Tanzania Breweries League and Vodacom Premier League, and is currently sponsored by NBC. The official website is https://ligikuu.co.tz.
