Stadionul Olimpia
Bucharest, Romania
The ground in the Vitan district of Bucharest keeps its old name, Stadionul Olimpia, though the football club that once called it home dissolved decades ago. The pitch is natural grass, but the surrounds tell a different story.
Capacity figures for the place are not consistent. One historical record, the Enciclopedia Sportului, lists tribunes for 3,000, while other records suggest a lower figure closer to 1,000. The discrepancy is not resolved; the ground simply sits there with two different histories. It is not the home of a major football side anymore. The rugby union teams, including CSM București, used to play here until 2019, and the local minirugby association still uses the site for their tournaments. The place has hosted the Memorialul Robert Ion and Laser Run events, but it is not a venue for top-flight football.
The location is specific: Calea Vitan nr. 182. It is distinct from other stadiums in Romania carrying the name Olimpia, such as the one in Satu Mare, which was renamed Stadionul Daniel Prodan. The opening year is not entirely certain, though 1961 is the date cited in the older encyclopaedia.
