The Cricket Ireland Inter-Provincial Limited Over Cup stands as the top tier of domestic 50-over cricket in Ireland. Founded in 2013 by the national governing body, the tournament replaced a traditional club structure with a professional franchise model. It operates as a closed system, meaning there is no promotion or relegation for the participating teams. The competition serves as a critical pathway for players seeking selection in Irish One Day Internationals, particularly since 2017 when the matches received List A status following Ireland’s elevation to Full Member status by the International Cricket Council.
For the 2026 season, the field consists of three franchises: Leinster Lightning, North-West Warriors, and Northern Knights. These teams represent provincial unions rather than local clubs. The format has evolved from an early double round-robin league into a structure featuring a league phase followed by a final match. Each side bats for 50 overs. While a fourth team, Munster Reds, was added in 2021, they have been excluded from this specific limited-over competition in the current campaign.
Leinster Lightning holds the record for success, having claimed the title 11 times as of the end of the 2026 season. Their victories include the inaugural 2013 edition and a sequence of three consecutive wins ending in 2026. Northern Knights have won twice, in 2013 and 2023, while Munster Reds secured the trophy once in 2022. The current holder of the cup is Leinster Lightning.
The competition previously operated under title sponsors such as Hanley Energy and Rario but now runs without commercial naming rights. It remains distinct from the parallel Inter-Provincial Trophy, which focuses on the 20-over T20 format.
