FairBreak Invitational Tournament exhibition (Hong Kong) 2023/24

The FairBreak Invitational operates as a standalone international franchise competition rather than part of any standard national cricket pyramid. Organised by FairBreak Global, the entity was established in 2013 by former Australian captain Lisa Sthalekar and her manager Shaun Martyn. Initially running under the name Women's International Cricket League, the group spent nearly a decade advocating for gender equality before launching its first sanctioned global tournament in Dubai in May 2022.

The event structures six franchise teams composed of international players drafted regardless of nationality. These squads, such as the Warriors and Falcons, compete in a format that typically involves a group stage followed by knockout semi-finals, a third-place play-off, and a final. The 2022 edition in Dubai featured a single round-robin group among six teams, with the Tornadoes winning the title. The 2023 edition in Hong Kong also featured six teams in a group stage, with the Warriors defeating the Falcons in the final.

Beyond the main tournament, the competition includes local exhibition matches designed to engage host communities. In Hong Kong, an exhibition match on April 3, 2023, at the Kowloon Cricket Club served as the opening event for the 2023 season. During this fixture, the FairBreak All-Stars defeated the HK Divas Women. This hybrid approach combines a global franchise league with local opportunities to highlight players from associate nations alongside stars from full member nations.

The primary purpose of the tournament extends beyond sport to promote gender equality, improve pay parity, and provide opportunities for players from associate nations. The competition differs from standard cricket events by its explicit social mission, franchise-based mixed-nationality squads, and focus on elevating associate nation players. While the main tournament focuses on international stars, the inclusion of local teams like the HK Divas Women demonstrates a commitment to community engagement in host cities.
