About

The Kashmir Premier League (KPL) is a professional Twenty20 (T20) cricket league that began in 2021. It operates as a standalone regional franchise tournament rather than part of the official domestic hierarchy sanctioned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Matches played within the competition do not carry official T20 status for statistical records recognised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) or the PCB.

Organised by Kashmir Premier League Private Limited and supported by regional authorities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, the league focuses on promoting cricket locally. It provides a platform for talent from the region and the Kashmiri diaspora instead of serving as a direct feeder to the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The structure typically includes a round-robin league stage followed by knockout playoffs to decide the champion.

The competition features six primary teams: Kotli Lions, Rawalakot Hawks, Mirpur Royals, Overseas Warriors, Muzaffarabad Tigers and Bagh Stallions. In its inaugural 2021 season, held in Muzaffarabad, the Rawalakot Hawks claimed the title. The Mirpur Royals subsequently won the championship in both 2022 and 2023. The 2022 victory was awarded after their final fixture against the Bagh Stallions was abandoned due to weather conditions.

Player eligibility distinguishes this tournament from Pakistan’s premier domestic league. While international stars participate, the KPL has historically prioritised retired internationals and local players. The league president is Arif Malik. Recent activity has shifted away from the main franchise tournament, with efforts concentrated on feeder leagues and trials following a hiatus after the 2023 campaign.
