Myanmar Women in Bhutan 2024/25

The BTCL Women's T20 Smash is the premier domestic women’s cricket tournament in Bhutan, organised by the Bhutan Cricket Council Board (BCCB). The competition operates as an annual T20 league and knockout event, typically held in July. Teams represent various districts, known as Dzongkhags, rather than adopting a franchise model. The league phase is divided into two groups, A and B, followed by semi-finals, a third-place playoff, and a final. There is no formal promotion or relegation system; participants are selected or formed by the BCCB from district associations. The tournament is branded with sponsor Bhutan Telecom Limited. The 2025 edition featured nine teams, including the Sarpang Strikers, who won the championship. Matches are often played on artificial strips in open spaces, although the Gelephu International Cricket Ground serves as a notable new venue. The structure evolved from the previous Women’s T20 National Championship, which was biennial and featured only two representative sides, Bhutan A Women and Bhutan B Women, with a hiatus between 2018 and 2023. Cricket was introduced to Bhutan in 1999 following the broadcast of the Cricket World Cup. The BCCB became an International Cricket Council (ICC) Associate Member in 2017. The Bhutan Women's national team, nicknamed the 'Lady Dragons', was formed in 2008 and made its international debut in 2009. Bhutan hosted the Myanmar Women's team in a five-match T20I series in December 2024. Myanmar won that series 5-0, highlighting the developmental gap between the two nations' women's programs. The exact founding year of the current 'BTCL Women's T20 Smash' brand is unclear, but it represents the current evolution of the national championship. The competition stands as the flagship tournament for women’s cricket in the country, distinct from the men's structures and international fixtures.
