The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy stands as Pakistan's highest level of first-class cricket. The competition sits at the top of the domestic pyramid, serving as the primary pathway for selecting players for the national Test and ODI teams. It was founded in 1953 by the Board of Control for Cricket in Pakistan, which is now known as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The tournament bears the name of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, and was initially created to help selectors gauge player form for the national team's first Test tour of England in 1954.
Matches are typically four days long. Historically, the competition included departmental teams such as PIA and National Bank, but reforms in 2019 shifted the structure to regional associations. This structure was expanded further in 2023 and 2024. The 2024–25 season featured 18 regional teams divided into three pools of six. A round-robin group stage is followed by a triangular knockout stage for the top three teams, culminating in a final.
Promotion and relegation exist between the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (Grade I) and the Hanif Mohammad Trophy (Grade II). The bottom team is relegated, and the Grade II winner is promoted. Karachi Blues are the most successful team with 10 titles. Sialkot won the 2024–25 edition, while Karachi Blues won the 2025–26 edition. The tournament is distinct from the T20-focused National T20 Cup and the franchise-based HBL PSL.
