BIK Karlskoga lost 3:4 to Kalmar in the opening round of the Hockey Allsvenskan on Friday evening. The visiting side took all three points despite our prediction favouring the hosts at 45 per cent confidence. The match went differently than expected, and Kalmar simply found a way back into it when the tie was slipping away.
Our forecast had the home side winning, but the game broke the other way. Kalmar have not won since their previous outing before this, yet they turned up on the right day. To be fair, the visitors showed more composure in the deciding moments than we anticipated.
BIK Karlskoga's recent form offered little reason to expect a clean sweep. They lost 1:2 to Södertälje, then 2:5 against AIK, before beating AIK 5:3 and losing 0:2 to Örebro. A 5:2 victory over Södertälje rounded out their last five, but consistency had been elusive. By then the pattern was clear enough.
Kalmar arrived with mixed results of their own. A 4:2 win over Oskarshamn was followed by a 2:3 defeat to Vimmerby, then a 3:4 loss to the same side. They had lost 3:4 to Oskarshamn as well before thrashing Tingsryd 6:1. The support of the fans could be called devoted, but that is an assessment, not a fact. The fact is that the club sits third in the table.
Both teams enter with zero points after one game, which tells us nothing useful about the season ahead. The standings go out of the window in these games anyway. What matters is who walks away with the win, and Kalmar did exactly that.
The result leaves BIK Karlskoga in tenth place after their opening defeat, while Kalmar sit third following their victory. The gap between them is not yet meaningful, but the direction is set. Cup football has its own rules, and this was just the first chapter.
