Match report

The Atlanta Dream secured a convincing 83-65 victory over the New York Liberty in the Women's NBA on Thursday evening. The top-ranked side took control early and never looked back, extending their advantage throughout the contest. The result leaves the Dream firmly at the summit while the Liberty drop further behind in fourth place.

What struck Étienne Gagnon watching from the stands was how quickly the game unraveled for the hosts. The Dream moved the ball with precision, recording 25 assists compared to the Liberty's 15. They shot 77 per cent from the field and found the range from beyond the arc, hitting 10 of their 35 three-point attempts. The Liberty managed just 55 per cent from the field and could only convert five of 35 from distance.

The turning point came when the Dream pulled away to establish a 20-point lead. By then the Liberty had little to work with — they committed 20 turnovers while the Dream turned the ball over only six times. Those mistakes proved costly, allowing Atlanta to score 15 points off Liberty possessions. The hosts' biggest lead never exceeded three points, a telling contrast to their opponents' commanding advantage.

Rebounding told a different story. The Liberty edged the Dream on the boards with 40 to 35, but it made little difference. The hosts grabbed seven offensive rebounds for six second-chance points, while Atlanta added eight second-chance points from their 12 offensive boards. The Dream also dominated in transition, scoring 12 fast-break points to the Liberty's five.

From the free-throw line the efficiency gap widened further. The Dream converted 13 of 15 attempts while the Liberty took 22 shots from the stripe and made 20. The Liberty also picked up a flagrant foul and 17 personal fouls, suggesting frustration mounting as the game slipped away.

The result completes a difficult week for New York. They had lost 84-95 to the same opposition just two days earlier and now faced a heavier defeat. We had given Liberty victory at 50 per cent confidence on our forecast, but the game followed a different path entirely — the Dream's ability to control tempo and punish errors proved decisive.

The Dream remain first with 29 wins from 43 matches, while the Liberty sit fourth with 26 victories and 17 defeats. The gap between them continues to widen, and for the hosts, the season's momentum appears to have shifted beyond recovery.
