Panthers Prove Too Strong for Spartans in Tamil Nadu Premier League
The Sichem Madurai Panthers moved further clear at the summit of the Tamil Nadu Premier League with a 195-159 victory over the Salem Spartans on Sunday. The away side took control early and never looked back, extending their advantage over the home side who remain rooted to eighth place.
Spartans had shown they could compete on occasion, losing by just three points to the Ruby Trichy Warriors in their previous outing. But this was different — the Panthers responded to their own narrow win against the same opposition by scoring freely. The hosts fell behind by 14 points within the opening quarter and never really recovered.
By then the pattern was clear. The Spartans managed 159 points, which would have been respectable against most opposition this season, but against a side averaging over 170 per game it was not enough. The Panthers scored 36 points in the final quarter alone, running the game out without much resistance from a team that had nothing left to play for.
The standings now tell the story. The Panthers sit ten points clear at the top with five wins from seven matches, while the Spartans have managed just one victory and accumulated two points from their opening seven games. That gap is unlikely to close anytime soon.
Spartans will need to find something — any consistency — if they are to avoid finishing at the bottom. They have played seven games and lost six, with only a single win to show for their efforts so far. The Panthers, meanwhile, have shown they can score in bunches and may yet dominate the table come the end of the season.
