England lead Pakistan by 23 after day one at Edgbaston

England bowled Pakistan out for 133 on the first day of the third Test at Edgbaston, then reached 156 for four in reply to lead by 23 runs at stumps.

Root won the toss and put the tourists in under cloud cover. Pakistan lasted just 33.5 overs, their shortest innings of the series.

Josh Tongue took 4-42. Ollie Robinson finished with 3-15 and passed 100 Test wickets along the way, becoming the first Englishman to reach the mark with a sub-20 average since a young Ian Botham. Jofra Archer took 3-25, despite having said beforehand that he was not looking forward to bowling at Edgbaston given its reputation for flat pitches. Saud Shakeel's 43 was the only substantial score in the Pakistan innings; Babar Azam made 7 and Mohammad Imran 5, both to Tongue.

Pakistan's debutant seamer Razaullah gave the tourists something to cheer when he had Joe Root lbw with his fourth ball in Test cricket, the tenth time Root has fallen lbw to Pakistan in his last 13 innings. Razaullah, hitting 92mph off a slinging, chest-on action, finished with 2-42 at the age of 21.

England slipped to 39 for three before Emilio Gay and Harry Brook put on fifties in the final session to steady the innings. Gay made 60 from 114 balls, his third Test half-century, and Brook added 52.

Play was interrupted for only five minutes by rain, yet just 73 overs were bowled across the day. Day two starts at 10.15am on Thursday.
