Brydon Carse cleared as police drop assault investigation
Derbyshire police have closed their inquiry into an alleged assault in Derby, but Carse still faces a Cricket Regulator probe before any England recall.
Brydon Carse will not face any charges after Derbyshire police dropped their investigation into an alleged assault in Derby city centre.
Images of Carse in handcuffs, surrounded by officers, circulated on social media the following day.
Derbyshire police confirmed the arrest at the time. "A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night," the force said. "However the man was de-arrested shortly afterwards having agreed to leave the area."
Three days later a further statement followed. "We are investigating allegations of an assault in Derby city centre," police said. "No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing."
That inquiry is now closed, with no action to be taken.
The arrest had already cost Carse his place in the England squad for the third Test against Pakistan at Edgbaston, as reported here on 4 September. He had been a non-playing member of the squad for the first Test at Headingley before Durham asked for his release, and the win over Derbyshire helped seal Durham's promotion from Division Two. England went on to beat Pakistan 3-0 in the series.
Carse still faces a separate investigation, this one from the Cricket Regulator, which will decide whether he faces disciplinary action under his central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board. That deal runs for a further 12 months. He was left out of the white-ball squad for this month's series against Sri Lanka, two T20 internationals and one one-day international.
With the police matter closed, the Regulator's findings become the remaining hurdle before Carse can expect a recall to the England set-up.
