India beat Japan by two runs in a rain-shortened T20 at Sano, avoiding what would have ranked among the sport's biggest upsets.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer top-scored with 16 off 12 balls, Sanju Samson added nine, and India were held to 32 for four. Charlie Hara-Hinze took two for 17 for the hosts.

Japan lost Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake and Ibrahim Takahashi in the first two overs and never recovered the ground. Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming made 12 before Washington Sundar had him out, and Benjamin Ito-Davis chipped in with nine as the chase fell two runs short.

The closest moment came in the final over, when a wide signalled by the umpire was overturned after a discussion with the square-leg official, a call that visibly frustrated the India camp.

Japan had arranged the fixture through diplomatic channels, and India agreed to it partly to get used to local conditions before defending their Asian Games title. As one of the seeded sides, India skip the group phase, alongside Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and open their campaign at the quarter-final stage against the runner-up of Group A, which pairs Afghanistan and Nepal with Japan. That match is set for Monday 28 September at Korogi Sports Park, Nisshin, meaning India could face Japan again within days of this near-miss.
