Chioma Okafur

Chioma Okafor was born in Blantyre, to a Nigerian father and a Malawian mother, and it was Malawi, not Nigeria, where her football began, at the Ascent Soccer Academy in Lilongwe. She chose to represent her father's country internationally, a decision that paid off in 2024, when she was part of the Nigerian squad that won the Women's Africa Cup of Nations. The Nigerian government recognised the achievement by naming her an Officer of the Order of the Niger.

The path to that squad ran through the United States. In 2019 Okafor moved from Malawi to attend the Berkshire School in Massachusetts, then went on to play college soccer at the University of Connecticut from 2022 to 2025. Her time at UConn built steadily: she was named to the First-Team All-Big East in three straight years, 2023, 2024 and 2025, and picked up Third-Team All-American honours in each of those same seasons. Her senior year brought the captaincy, and 2024 was her standout campaign individually, when she was named Big East Tournament Offensive MVP and reached the semifinal stage of the MAC Hermann Trophy voting. Across her college career she made 57 appearances, scoring 30 goals and adding 5 assists.

Okafor turned professional in December 2025, signing a three-year contract with the North Carolina Courage that runs through 2028, with the club holding an option to extend it a further year. The move brought her into the NWSL as a forward with an Africa Cup of Nations winner's medal already to her name.
