Ezequiel Matías Muñoz

Ezequiel Muñoz's career carries a shadow he never quite escaped: a ruptured cruciate ligament sustained in March 2020, right around the time he had moved to Independiente on loan. The injury required surgery and kept him out of training until July 2021, and he never made a single official appearance for the club. It also cost him a call-up to the senior Argentina squad — Diego Maradona had named him for a friendly against Panama back in 2009, but the knee problem ruled him out, leaving him without senior caps despite representing the country at under-17 and under-20 level.

Before that setback, Muñoz had built a solid European career. He left Boca Juniors' academy for Palermo in 2010 in a €5 million deal and spent five seasons there, making around 98 appearances as a centre-back. A loan to Sampdoria followed, then a free move to Genoa, where he played two seasons and made 49 appearances, before joining Leganés in Spain for €2.5 million.

Muñoz returned to Argentina in 2019 with Lanús, and after the injury-disrupted spell at Independiente, rebuilt his playing time at Estudiantes de La Plata and then back at Lanús, where he made 40 appearances across two seasons. In January 2026 he joined Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza, continuing a career built largely on positional experience at centre-back.
